ELÄA Luxury Pen
Collectable bespoke pens where quality is key

Company ELÄA approached us to design the mechanical elements of their new luxury bespoke pen.

Their design is based on traditional middle eastern stylus’ which were made from palm fronds. Their brief was to re-imagine this traditional design with modern engineering and performance.
Our role was to handle the mechanics of the pen, lid, ink cartridge and pen base whilst maintaining the traditional aesthetic required.
We worked closely with the client to concept ideas, and to understand which elements of the design were critical. Usability and quality of finish was high on the priority list. “How many turns should the lid take to unscrew” was the sort of requirements we had to consider. The end customer would have very stringent demands and we had to deliver this through robust and elegent mechanical design.
We also looked into finishes on the pen barrel to give a traditional aesthetic but also robust coating.
Their pens are highly collectable, fetching a fair sum, only 71 items made in total each uniquely serialised.
The internals of the pen consist of very fine pitch threads to easily allow the user to replace the ink cartridge as required. The ink catridge is closely retained to ensure an ergonomic and high quality feel when using the pen.
We also concepted and design a base which looks like the pen is floating. At first glance it is hard to wrap your head around. We designed the components to be precisely machined to create this effect.

Our core skillset is in mechanical design but we love the combination of functionality and aesthetics in a design. It creates a unique challenge we thrive to solve. The ELÄA pen project is the perfect example of this. One of these pens ended up on the VIP sign-in book at the 2022 Dubai expo, so many famous people have used this pen.
